The following foods are known to trigger headaches in many patients. Kindly be aware of them when you chart your headaches with the headache calendar. Allow 4 - 24 hours for food to trigger headache.

  • Nuts
  • Pizza
  • Onions
  • Raisins
  • Papayas
  • Herring
  • Avocado
  • Chocolate
  • Canned figs
  • Peanut butter
  • Chinese foods
  • Chicken livers
  • Sour cream and yogurt
  • Vinegar (except white vinegar)
  • Seeds (sunflower, sesame, pumpkin, etc.)
  • Bananas (no more than half a banana per day).
  • Anything that is fermented, pickled or marinated.
  • Pods of broad beans (lima, navy, pinto, garbanzo and pea)
  • Any foods containing large amounts of monosodium glutamate (MSG).
  • Excessive tea, coffee and cola beverages. No more than two (2) cups total per day.
  • Citrus fruit (no more than one serving per day: one orange; one grapefruit; one glass of orange juice).
  • Fermented sausage (processed meats such as bologna, salami, pepperoni, summer sausage, hot dogs and ham).
  • Hot fresh breads, raised coffee cakes and raised doughnuts (these are permitted if they are allowed to cool -- toast is permitted.)
  • Ripened cheeses such as Cheddar, Emmentaler, Gruyer, Stilton, Brie and Camembert (cheeses that are permitted include American, cottage, cream and Velveeta)

NOTE: Avoid all alcoholic beverages, if possible. If you must drink, no more than two (2) normal size drinks. Suggested drinks include Haute Sauterne Riesling, Seagram's V.O., Cutty Sark, Vodka.
